Kei Nishikori still feels pain in right elbow

Japanese tennis ace Kei Nishikori has revealed that he still feels pain in his elbow. However, the 28-year-old still expects that he will be ready to kick off his US hard-court campaign at the upcoming Citi Open. World No. 20 Nishikori last played at Wimbledon -- where he reached the quarter-final.

The Japanese was bidding to reach the semi-final at The All England Club for the first time in his career. Yet, the 28-year-old couldn't pull off a big surprise and beat eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final.

Now the 13-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic handed a 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-2 loss to the world No. 20. 2014 US Open champion Nishikori debuted on the hard courts of Washington in 2007. Nishikori has played at the Citi Open in Washington six times so far in his career.

The Japanese has had success at the tournament so far. The 28-year-old made it all the way in Washington in 2015 when he beat home-favorite John Isner in the final. The world No. 20 also reached the semi-final at the tournament a year ago -- where he lost to eventual champion Alexander Zverev.

The Citi Open has been scheduled to be held from 30 July - 05 August. "I still feel a bit of pain in my right elbow, but it's getting better. Will be ready in time for Citi Open," Nishikori said . Also read: Wimbledon boys' singles runner-up Jack Draper ready for bigger scene
