Stan Wawrinka breaks silence, opens up on relationship with Nick Kyrgios

The first round match between Stan Wawrinka and Nick Kyrgios at the Toronto's Rogers Cup is definitely one of the most interesting ones in the draw. In 2015, at Montreal, they had a particular conversation during the match, as Kyrgios said that Thanasi Kokkinakis dated Wawrinka's current girlfriend, Donna Vekic.

Commenting on his relationship with Kyrgios, interviewed by Swiss Tennis, Wawrinka said: 'It's true that we had a "clinker", but time has gone since when we lift the spirits. Facing him on Tuesday is not an issue at all.

Kyrgios is an often injured player but can play very well also without coming from many matches behind.' The 33-year-old also spoke about his current situation: 'I do not doubt going back to my best level, but that does not mean I'll be able to win other Grand Slam tournaments.

This confidence will come back today, in two weeks or in four months. Putting the puzzle back in place takes time. Doctors told me that it would take between 12 and 18 months to fully regain my abilities again. I wasn't sure to come back after my surgery, I am not sure that many athletes came back after a similar surgery...' He also commented on his physical condition: 'I have no more apprehension on the court with my knee.

I’m really happy about that. I have to accept these highs and lows. Mentally, it's sometimes very hard. But I am very happy with my level since Wimbledon. The results will come back. I just need some wins to gain confidence.' Wawrinka also explained that he can't use the protected ranking to join tournaments entry list because he stopped competing for five months and weeks, and not for full six months.

That's why 'I was ready to play Toronto qualies', then he took Andy Murray's vacant wild card. ALSO READ: Alexander Zverev wants to win US Open, overcome Roger Federer in rankings
