Bjorn Borg: 'I was probably the only guy ever who respected John McEnroe'

In an interview to Tennis Channel, the 11-time Grand Slam winner Bjorn Borg opened up on his rivalry and friendship with the seven-time Major champion John McEnroe. Last week Borg and McEnroe were respectively Team Europe and Team World captains.

'We were both fighting for the number one in the world in tennis, but we respected each other', Borg said. 'John respected me and I was probably the only guy who respected him out of all the people in tennis history. So we have got a good feeling from each other, but after the tennis we really became very good and close friends, with the families, we call and see each other.

That's very rare in sports in general. We understand each other, we know tennis, we played tennis, we had a great career. The other thing is that today tennis is being played differently, look at all these great players, and then you have the competition, so many players around the world.

But me and John are happy to be at the Laver Cup, and then John is doing 100 other things in tennis.' Borg believes that Roger Federer does not get any particular treatment by his teammates while playing the Laver Cup. Borg said there isn't any aura around Federer, but just respect and good environment.

'He is just one player in the team', Borg said. 'That's why I think the whole team is very loose and relaxed because no one is really special. He has to play his matches but everybody has found together and that's important, because the players, even the new ones, have to feel comfortable being around Federer or Djokovic.' Borg also thinks that Team World players were louder than Team Europe's, which is natural: 'They show the feelings, they are emotional and laughing.

Our personalities is coming from Europe, it's not the same. We don't do this kind of things. We are a little bit more quiet compared to the other team.' ALSO READ: 'Roger Federer should never play on clay again' - Andy Roddick
