Taking on the pairing of Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs of the WTA Finals in Singapore, Australian Ash Barty and American Coco Vandeweghe are looking forward to having fun at the year ending event. The draw ceremony took place last night and was live on Facebook with Barty and Coco, the US Open and Miami Champions a part of the elite 8 teams field.
“It was really nice to kind of get the monkey off the back,” Barty said of winning her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. “She (Vandeweghe) is trying to break me out of my shell a little bit,” she added, referring to their exuberant celebrations.
“It’s slowly cracking, but there’s still a lot to go.” The doubles event at the WTA Finals uses a knockout format; Barty and Vandeweghe are unseeded while their opponents comprising of Mertens and Schuurs are seeded fourth.
This is the second straight year Barty has appeared in doubles in Singapore. Last year she combined with countrywoman Casey Dellacqua, falling in the first round to Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson. Barty will again feature for the second straight year in the 12-player singles field at next week’s WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, China.
"I am so excited to qualify for Zhuhai for the second year in a row. We are looking forward to getting there, playing well and finishing our 2018 season very strongly. We'll see you all there!” she said. ALSO READ Thanasi Kokkinakis on trial period with ex Andre Agassi fitness coach
