Laura Siegemund: I am happy to be back

Victoria Azarenka’s first appearance at the Australian Open since 2016 ended with an unceremonious exit for the Belarusian at the hands of Laura Siegemund, who beat the former World No.1 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2. “I’m so happy to be back,” Siegemund said. “A couple of years ago I had a great match here playing against Jelena Jankovic.

“I guess I played a good first set, but even though I was up in the tiebreak, I let go a little bit and she was right there and got me. “I took a time-out and reset myself – I knew I was playing a good match and I just had to close those situations.

In the third set I stayed very focused, because I knew she was not going to hand me the match. I was going to have to gain it, and that’s what I did”. Making a comeback in her own right, the German suffered a knee injury during Roland Garros in 2017, forcing her to retire in Paris and alsokeeping her out of action for the entire 2018 “I had a tough journey to come back,” Siegemund added. “My ranking now is on the way back up, but to play in this arena, this is what I want to do.

It’s a hard way back after an injury like I had, and I’m just enjoying it so much”. ALSO READ ATP Australian Open: Alexander Zverev wins, Kei Nishikori survives scare
