Ajla Tomjlanovic outclassed 29th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-1 in just over an hour to set up a second-round mouth-watering clash with Victoria Azarenka at Wimbledon. Hoping to continue her fine form at the All England Club, Tomjlanovic has reached the Second Round for the first time in 4 years.
“It probably looked a bit easier than it was,” she said. “First rounds are always tricky and I don’t think it was her best performance but I was able to take advantage and relieved I won”. She is showing promising signs now but admitted that there was one thing that was getting into her mind.
This was just her 5th first round win in her last 16 Grand Slam appearances even though she has reached 3 finals in the last year and has reached a personal best ranking of No.39. “Wimbledon is always special and I think last year and this year I have had some pretty rough draws in the slams,” she said.
“I’ve had a couple of tough matches so it was really good to get through to the second round. It’s just the first round … but overall I think the ceiling’s still high. But I’m glad with where I’m going and my path”.
“I think I have a lot more to show and to keep building”. Speaking about her next round’s opponent – Victoria Azarenka, Tomjlanovic said, “I think it’s actually a tough second round, after beating a seed. I’m going to have to bring my A-game”.
