In an interview, speaking of the equal prize money in tennis, Maria Sakkari praised Stefanos Tsitsipas. "Stefanos is very supportive of women. In discussions we've had, about this issue in sport [of equal pay], Stefanos is pro-equality for all", said Sakkari.
In San Jose this week Sakkari defeated Elina Svitolina to set a clash against Ons Jabeur: "I was one step away from losing", she said analyzing her win. "I'm very excited that I managed to turn the score around and be back in the semifinal here in San Jose.
I have great memories from last year, so it's super nice to be back." On how she managed to save match points, the 24-year-old Athens native added: "I didn't remember that it was four [match points] - I thought it was two.
My coach came in and he said, if you did it once in Rabat [where she beat Johanna Konta from a set and a break down in the final], you can do it again." On how it feels to have a coach who is as old as her, Sakkari concluded: "it is different, I have to tell you, because I always had older coaches.
I never had very old coach. Last one was my grandfather, so you can -- (Laughing). But it's quite nice. Because, you know, we're very good friends, as well, so we do stuff together. And I remember in San Jose we were riding the scooters for, like, 45 minutes.
So I wouldn't be able to do it with my grandfather, I assume. So it's quite cool. We can spend time together like friends."
