In an interview, Austria's Davis Cup team captain Stefan Koubek said that Dominic Thiem will play the away tie against Finland in September later this year. Thiem will also play the Laver Cup in Geneva the week after Davis Cup, but he feels ready to have a packed schedule.
"Dominic 99.9 percent accepted it, obviously we have to wait for the US Open to come but I think he will be there. He always wanted to play for us and he made a commitment pretty early." Koubek also went on to criticize Thiem's former agent and coach Gunter Bresnik.
Koubek recalled the 2015 Davis Cup quarter-final tie against Netherlands in Kitzbühel. "Dominic trained at a high intensity for three hours the day before the tie started, which you usually do not do. Gunter was just doing what he wanted."
Thiem lost both singles matches he played that weekend against Thiemo de Bakker and Robin Haase. A 7,000-seat stadium in Finland is set to host the event and 3,100 tickets have been already sold. Dennis Novak, Sebastian Ofner and the doubles duo of Philipp Oswald and Oliver Marach should join the Austrian team too.
Analyzing his opening-round loss to Sam Querrey in Wimbledon, Thiem was asked if he wished Wimbledon was later on the calendar. "Always had been like it is now. I think that's fine. Other players also make it. Maybe they have a little bit more experience or they are more talented on grass. I don't know. I mean, I cannot hope that Wimbledon is going to be later."
