Dominic Thiem is unsure about whether playing in Cincinnati. The Austrian player has been dealing with a cold since last week in Montreal and he is not at his best yet. Thiem had a short training session on Monday and he will decide on Tuesday if he will start his campaign.
His opponent would be the Frenchman Richard Gasquet who defeated Andy Murray 6-4 6-4. Gasquet leads the head to head meetings with Thiem 2-0. The match would take place on Wednesday. "On Saturday and Sunday I have not done anything", explained Thiem to reporters on Monday.
He travelled from Montreal to Cincinnati via Chicago. "Today I would practice for an hour but I am not at 100 percent yet. Obviously, my goal is to be able to play well on Wednesday. But we will see. I will see if I can have a couple of good training sessions but I a not sure."
Last year Thiem did not compete in Cincinnati after dealing with a viral illness coming from Toronto. "I do not want to put my body too much under stress", he said. "Because if I come back too soon, it will have a long term effect on New York and all that comes after.
So I will play only if I am at half of my shape." Thiem lost to the Russian Daniil Medvedev in the Montreal quarter-finals. He asked for a late start in Cincinnati and he is supposed to headline the Wednesday schedule.
