Daniil Medvedev is the latest addition to the Erste Bank Open field in Vienna that takes place from 21 to 27 October 2019. The Russian, who reached Washington and Montreal finals and won Cincinnati title, joins a star-stunned field that already features the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Dominic Thiem.
"Daniil Medvedev played an important role in my thoughts for a while", said the Tournament Director Herwig Straka through a press release. "I got a mail from him where he shyly asked if this year he would have a chance to play in Vienna.
He has been having an amazing season and he is still hungry for more success. We are happy he plays the Erste Bank Open this year for the first time. I am convinced that with his attractive gamestyle he will make fans excited in the Wiener Stadthalle."
There will also be young players like Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Nick Kyrgios. "Our strategy is to always look at the future and give a chance to the world class players and Vienna is great for that.
Karen Khachanov got a wild card three years ago and this year he comes back to Vienna as a top ten guy. Felix Auger-Aliassime was there through a wild card last year and he is now the world No. 19. And with Daniil Medvedev, there are so many players who will play a big role on the ATP Tour in the next years."
Meanwhile Thiem recalled last year's US Open loss to Rafael Nadal: "Despite this loss hurt me for a while, it gave me a boost for the rest of the season. This year I am on a good path and I will start training again on Monday. It looks good."
