Former world No. 1 John McEnroe has picked rising Canadian star Denis Shapovalov as current player similar to him. Shapovalov, 20, is one of the most promising and talented players on the whole tour as he is never afraid to go for his shots and play an aggressive style of play.
The Canadian hasn't yet won an ATP title but he broke into the top-20 for the first time earlier this season. "Well, I'd say Shapovalov is, Denis is the guy that reminds me the most," McEnroe told the US Open, when asked to pick current player that's similar to him.
"It's not like he plays the same way, but he sort of, I envision playing a similar way that I would have played had I been playing in this era. "You know, it's a bigger hitting game. Balls struck faster, harder, the swings are bigger, and he is not a huge guy, you know maybe a half inch tall than I'm.
"So, and he is a lefty and I can sort of relate to his energy and he moves very well around the court. So he brings an intensity and an energy that I can relate to."
