In an interview to ABC Rod Laver spoke about Nick Kyrgios' controversial behaviour. The Australian legend said: "He's his own worst enemy I think when you look at his game, he can be brilliant at times, and then he just, he battles to concentrate all the way through a match.
It's a shame in many ways because I think that he potentially, with the way he plays, he's got every chance to reach the top. But it's just a matter of him thinking tennis and not letting too much on the outside control his game and his antics."
"I think you've got to want to do it yourself. You've got to be able to try to control your own abilities and I think being able to get out there and play your best tennis, if someone like Kyrgios can get off the court quickly, because he serves brilliantly, he's got a great game, he can play the volleys and he can do all the shots, but how do you get him to just pay attention to the game? I know he has it in him.
It's just a matter of can he apply himself? I wish he would apply himself better because he does have that ability to be the best player in the world in effect. He's proved that he can do it, so much of it, but can he do it match after match? And that's where he seems to have some of the problems."
