In an interview with the ITF's YouTube Channel, Dominic Thiem praised his girlfriend Kristina Mladenovic's team spirit. Speaking ahead of last week's Davis Cup tie between Finland and Austria, Thiem said: "She is a way tougher character on the court than I am.
She may handle better to lose or to win than I do so I can learn a lot from her, and also, she is an unbelievable Fed Cup player, she competed in the finals already, she won a lot of ties for her country I would say, she is in the final again this year so she loves it and I think she can raise her level when it comes to playing for friends."
Asked when he first heard about the Davis Cup, Thiem replied: "It was actually on a videotape because my dad is a huge tennis fan and he had this videotape at home from the big round Austria had between '88 and '90 when they ended up in the semifinals against the United States.
It was and still is one of the most important sports events in the history of our country and I watched this videotape many times when I was four or five years old and that's my first memory." On his first Davis Cup experience, he concluded: "It was Croatia against Austria because we went for a tennis camp and that was the first time I witnessed it live."
Thiem will play the Laver Cup for Team Europe in Geneva, Switzerland with local hero Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal among others.
