Rising star Alexander Bublik, 22, kept it classy after falling just short of winning his maiden ATP title at the Chengdu Open. The 22-year-old made a good start to the match but former world No. 10 Pablo Carreno Busta came from a set down to win 6-7 (5) 6-4 7-6 (3) in the Chengdu final.
Carreno Busta, 28, now leads the head-to-head against the Kazakhstani 2-0. Bublik has now fallen twice just short in ATP finals this year as also ended runner-up to John Isner in the Newport final in July. "I am happy to be in my second final and I am happy for Pablo, he played an unbelievable match," Bublik said after the final, per the ATP website.
Bublik saved two consecutive set points on his serve in the 10th game, before he converted his first set point in the first set tie-break. Carreno Busta claimed the first break of the match in the seventh game of the second set and then held on to his serve to force a decider.
As no more breaks of serve were seen -- the decider had to be resolved in a tie-break -- which the Spaniard controlled from the beginning until the end to earn his fourth ATP title.
