Croatian tennis star Marin Cilic, 31, didn't hide his happiness and excitement after collecting his 500th ATP match win. On Thursday, the 31-year-old beat fellow compatriot Ivo Karlovic 6-1 7-6 (5) in his opening match at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
Cilic, seeded at No. 3, broke the big-serving Karlovic twice in the first set to easily win the opener. Cilic didn't manage to break Karlovic in the second set but realized his first match point in the tie-break to seal a straight-set and record his 500th win at the ATP level.
"It would definitely mean that I've had an amazing career. I’ve been on the Tour for many years and, more or less, every season has been quite consistent from me," Cilic exclusively told the ATP website.
Cilic is now just one of 10 active players who have won at least 500 matches on the ATP Tour. The Croatian is one of the most accomplished players on the Tour, having won a Grand Slam, Masters and Davis Cup title. "Overall, my goal is to be the best I can be.
You always want to be pushing that limit and never be too satisfied. It’s definitely important to have that motivation to keep moving you forward," Cilic claimed.
