The world No. 8 Elina Svitolina was included on the list of the 100 most influential women in Ukraine according to Focus magazine. This year the 25-year-old Odessa native won 35 matches out of 56 she played. She lost in the semi-finals at Wimbledon and US Open.
Last year she defeated Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win the WTA Finals in Singapore. Svitolina's sponsor Yuriy Sapronov spoke about how they financed Svitolina's career at the start. "Probably the biggest amount of money was invested from 13 to 17 years.
I do not exactly remember, but $400-500,000 over four years. She was lucky to have calm parents. Every parent thinks that if something doesn't work, it's not the player's fault but the coach's. There are many examples where parents make mistakes."
Svitolina was one of the players to qualify for the WTA Finals in Shenzhen at the last minute along with Belinda Bencic. On how it felt to reach the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, Bencic said: “My emotions are over the top I can't believe it's over and I finally reached it...
But obviously my celebration on the court was for the Moscow finals but as well for a spot in Shenzhen." The other six players to qualify are Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, Bianca Andreescu, Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova.
