Matteo Berrettini defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets to reach the Vienna's Erste Bank Open semifinals. The 23-year-old Italian player reflected on his improvements. "I said it many times, last year I realized of winning in Gstaad in November so everything what's happening now will be on my mind for a while.
I am playing many matches and going through new experiences. I am growing a lot, my level is getting bigger and I am taking a lot of positives that will be useful in the future to overcome tough moments because I cannot raise all the time.
So I hope to keep enjoying myself. Last year I had never reached an ATP 500 quarter-final while this year I played at this stage of the tournament in Grand Slams, Masters 1000s and other events. You are more ready and you face matches in a different way.
So even today I told myself to stay calm and do what I can do because that's the way. Even if I missed the first or serve or forehand, that's my way to win the point. I like to be aggressive and hurt technique-wise."
Berrettini also spoke about his girlfriend Alja Tomljanovic who is with him this week: "The problem is that she has her career. I cannot bring her with me throughout the season. Yeah, I like training with her and she definitely plays better than my coach", he laughed.
"We played for the first time together in Wimbledon and I was impressed even if I do not often play with women."
