Fabio Fognini's ATP season has ended after his three-set loss to Denis Shapovalov in Paris. The Italian player said: "Unfortunately his serve made a difference, since for a set I was not able to return. I hit three unusual backhand unforced errors which costed me the match, that's why I got so angry.
I have to give credit to him because his level got much higher even if I do not like too much the game style of Next Gen guys. They have a too quick game, which is mostly about serve and forehand, so for a guy like me it turns tough."
On his split with coach Franco Davin, Fognini added: "I do not really have a team, even if there is Corrado who helps me a lot and who believes a lot in myself. I have to thank Franco because it was a great season, even if we took some wrong decisions schedule-wise.
In the last two years I could have reached the ATP Finals, I trusted my team and I should have made different choices. We skipped some important tournaments. The schedule was totally wrong. It should not happen given my experience but it went like this.
But I can still perform well. I may have played two ATP Finals in a row making different choices. But I am about to end another season as a top 15 player, my family is doing very well, my daughter is about to be born and I could not ask for more."
On the new Davis Cup format in Madrid, Fognini concluded: "We are a very competitive team. We have two singles top 15 players, Andreas Seppi is very experienced, Lorenzo Sonego had a great season and Simone Bolelli ended his season on the top 100 rankings. But now it's not my priority, I just want to recharge batteries and spend time with my family."
