Rising star Jannik Sinner is extremely happy with the way things are going in Italian tennis. Several Italian players enjoyed a breakthrough season on the Tour in 2019 as Italy finishes the year with eight player ranked inside the top-100.
Sinner, 18, won the Next Gen ATP Finals and rose to a career-high ranking of No. 78 in the world after starting the year ranked at No. 551. Matteo Berrettini, 23, and 32-year-old Fabio Fognini both enjoyed great seasons as they became the first Italian players in more than four decades to break into the top-10.
Lorenzo Sonego, 24, also enjoyed a great year as he claimed his maiden ATP title at the Antalya Open and broke into the top-50. "Even at a higher level like [with] Berrettini, Sonego, we are now very high [in the ATP Rankings] and many players are playing very good tennis this year and I think if there are many young generation in Italy, it’s very important. “But I’m very happy how it’s going on with Italian tennis," Sinner told the ATP Cup.
