An unfortunate injury sustained at a practice session led to Denis Shapovalov hiring physiotherapist Stefano De Pirro. Shapovalov, 20, met De Pirro for the first time at the Vienna Open in October 2016. At the time, De Pirro was working with Dominic Thiem.
Shapovalov, who was just coming off a victorious run at the Wimbledon boys' singles event, had a practice scheduled with Thiem. "I met him in 2016, while working with Thiem in Vienna. Denis came to the Bresnik facility to train in the fall, he was very young but his talent was noticeable.
His bad luck (... or my luck?) During a session with Thiem fell into the field and sprained his ankle. It was a real pity that a 17-year-old who had come from Canada to work with Dominic could not train, so I took care of him," De Pirro exclusively told SuperTennis.
De Pirro and the 20-year-old Canadian have been working together since 2017. This past season, Shapovalov won his maiden ATP title at the Stockholm Open and reached a career-high ranking of No. 15 in the world.
