South-Korean Hyeon Chung says the Mubadala World Tennis Championship may be an exhibition but everyone gives its 100 percent there. For over a decade now, the Abu Dhabi exhibition has been a popular spot for the top players ahead of the new season.
This year wasn't any different as world No. 1 Rafael Nadal and second-ranked Novak Djokovic are the main stars at the event. Russia's Daniil Medvedev, Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev, as well as Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, are also preparing in Abu Dhabi for the new season.
Chung lost to Khachanov in the Abu Dhabi quarterfinal, before he also lost to Rublev a day later. "Even though these are exhibition matches, everyone gives 100 percent because this is just ahead of the new season. This is a great chance to play against top ranked players before the season.
I will try my best to play well this season," Chung exclusively told the Khaleej Times. Chung made his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open in 2018 and also achieved a career-high ranking of No. 19 in the world before he was struck by health issues. Chung, now ranked at No. 128 in the world, enters the new season healthy as he hopes to have a big 2020 season.
