Fabio Fognini played a great 2019 and reached the Top 10 for the first time in his career. A few days ago, the Italian announced the birth of his second daughter Farah with his wife Flavia Pennetta. At the Monte Carlo Masters, he defeated Dušan Lajović in the final in straight sets, winning the biggest title of his career and becoming the first Italian to win a Masters 1000 title.
“I could qualify for the ATP Finals. It would have been the best way to crown a great season. I have to look ahead to my next goals and not rest on my laurels, but sometimes I look back to my win in Monte-Carlo, especially my first match against Andrey Rublev, when I was on the verge of defeat, but I found the strength to bounce back and win the match.
It was the turning point of my season” - said Fabio in a recent interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport. Fognini also revealed his main goal for 2020: “I am very happy that the ATP Finals will be held in Turin from 2021.
It’s a good sign for Italian tennis. I hope to reach the goal to qualify for the ATP Finals in 2020. If I keep a consistent level during the season, I can achieve my goal. The bad results in the past editions of the US Open ruined my chance to qualify for London.
I am enjoying this great period of my life. It’s an immense joy to be father for the second time. It’s a big motivation to have children, but also a big commitment. I need a coach, who follows me when I am not travelling around the world for the tournaments”.
