Fognini: "I arrived yesterday at almost three in the morning"

Russia defeated Italy 3-0 on the first day of the ATP Cup - the new team event on the calendar from 3 to 12 January - on the fast court of the RAC Arena in Perth. Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev got their first win of the season by beating Stefano Travaglia (who replaced the injured Matteo Berrettini) and Fabio Fognini.

“I'm really proud and really happy about my performance,” said Fognini after his match. “I did everything I can do. I played, I think, really good tennis. I was just tired in the end because, of course, I have less energy than the beginning.

[It] was completely tough leaving home. The first thing that I did, I was asking Flavia if she was feeling okay, if everything was 100 per cent. I arrived yesterday at almost three in the morning. I woke up, played 20 minutes and went onto court”.

"I mean, I'm really happy for the team. That's what we wanted, 3-0," said Medvedev. "Great doubles match out there... Today, I think was a great match. I think [it was] even zero break points for the other team.

We were on top of them. Really great, great night tonight." "It's very important to go through [to the Final Eight], no matter how," Safin added. "Today they did the job 3-0 [and it] gives them confidence."
