French tennis star Gael Monfils revealed he was a bit surprised by the level of play world No. 33 Cristian Garin showed in the second set of their ATP Cup clash. Monfils, ranked at No. 10 in the world, found a way to avoid going into a decider as he beat the rising Chilean star 6-3 7-5 to ensure the first victory for France in Brisbane.
After cruising past the first set, the Frenchman made a slow start to the second set as Garin claimed an early break. After falling 4-1 down in the second set, Monfils showed great mental strength as he broke the Chilean twice and won six of the following seven games to earn a straight-set win.
"It was great today. I think he had a good period in the second set, actually a strong period. It shook me a little bit,” Monfils said, per the ATP Cup. “But I think slowly I get back in shape. I had a good pre-season and then I had to stop because I hurt a bit myself during the pre-season. And then I come back a little bit stronger. And here I was hitting it quite a lot actually and it felt great."
