Rising Norwegian star Casper Ruud was extremely happy after beating world No. 12 Fabio Fognini at the ATP Cup as he hopes to beat more high-ranked players going forward. Ruud, ranked at No. 54 in the world, delivered a big performance against 2019 Monte Carlo Masters champion Fognini as he demolished the Italian 6-2 6-2.
The 21-year-old broke Fognini twice in each set and dropped no service games en route to forcing a deciding rubber against Italy. Two days earlier, the Norwegian handed a defeat to 19th-ranked American John Isner. "I'm very, very happy and excited about beating another Top 20 player, and the way I did it also,” Ruud said, per the ATP Cup.
“I played a very good match. The score was more comfortable than against Isner… It's a great start of the year, and I'm looking forward for more and hopefully I can beat even higher-ranked players throughout the rest of the season."
Unfortunately for Norway, they fell short of completing a comeback win against Italy as Ruud and Viktor Durasovic were beaten by Simone Bolelli and Fognini in the deciding rubber.
