Guido Pella beat Marin Cilic, 7-6 6-3 after 1h52m and Diego Schwartzman defeated Borna Coric 6-2 6-2, results that, added to the victory of Poland against Austria, gave Argentina the classification to quarterfinals of the ATP Cup.
Argentina finally obtained the combination of results that made possible the miracle of accessing the quarterfinals after its faltering start due to a hard defeat against Austria (3-0) and a win by the minimum against Poland (2-1) in the first two days.
"A day ago we were out and now we are in the quarters, so we are really happy. Guido played an amazing match today and I think we deserve to be in the quarter-finals, " said Schwartzman. He had lost two of his three previous ATP Head2Head matches against Coric, but he was locked in from the start in Sydney.
The World No. 13 won 49 per cent of his return points, using his return to get to neutral or offence in rallies. "I think I played very solid from the baseline. My service game was improving a lot after the first set, so I started to feel much more confident with my game, with my whole game," Pella added.
"I think in the end I was playing my best tennis with great shots, very good from the baseline. I also played good volleys, so I think overall I did a very good match." Argentina could be one of the surprises in Sydney from Thursday.
