After failing to make it to the final of the Australian Open, Simona Halep felt disappointment and was hoarded by a feeling of sorrow, thinking at the fact she was so close to edge Garbine Muguruza in the 7/6 (10/8) 7/5 defeat.
“Maybe I could have been more brave in the points that were important. I didn’t do that and maybe I went a little bit defensive in those balls and I couldn’t take the domination of the point. She served very well in the important moments.
My return was not great today. I think it was a good match for both of us, but she was stronger in the end”. Halep explained her defeat. The encounter between the 2019 and 2017 Wimbledon champions was indeed very tight.
Simona Halep missed 4 set points in the first set and led 5-3 in the second one, but she failed to win either of the two. “To lose like this hurts more! I’m in pain now, I have to admit, but life is going on [...] I had many chances to win this match, but didn’t happen.
She was better today”. Simona Halep confessed at the post-match conference. Garbine Muguruza’s final opponent is Sofia Kenin, the American who upset Ashleigh Barty in the other semifinal. Even though Kenin is ranked above Muguruza in the WTA rankings and she has kicked out the world number one, Simona Halep thinks the Spaniard will win the Grand Slam and even more than that.
“I think she is able to win the tournament. If she can play like this every day, she can be number one for sure, but it’s tough to do that. The consistency on the [WTA] Tour is the most important thing. She’s a great champion, she knows how to win Grand Slams, how to win titles, so she’s okay. ” said Simona Halep.
