Before the round-of-16 match that opposed Rafael nadal to Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open, seven-time Grand Slam singles champion John McEnroe told El Pais about the players in which he sees a reflection of himself. “The guy who reminds me of myself the most is probably Shapovalov, because of the way he plays,” McEnroe said.
“And obviously Kyrgios, because he has personality and there are some similarities”. Kyrgios is famous for his moody outbursts, for which McEnroe was also known. However, the Australian and the American do not seem to share the same mindset, as McEnroe hinted.
“He [Kyrgios] has an incredible talent for tennis, no doubt,” the Eurosport commentator said. “I like Nick, but the difference is that I looked at guys like Jimmy Connors and felt that I had to get in front of the mirror and ask myself: Am I trying as hard as he is? I think Nick has to consider something like that. You must work hard and compete”.
