Richard Gasquet defines his win against Feliciano Lopez as 'miraculous'

Playing at the ATP 250 in Montpellier, Richard Gasquet has surprised even himself by winning 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-2 against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez to reach the event’s quarterfinals. Unseeded, the World No. 58 had to start his campaign against fellow French Gilles Simon, whom he beat him 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32.

“I arrived very tired, aching a lot after my first match (against Gilles Simon), it was very hard to recover,” Gasquet told L'Equipe. “Losing the first set 7-6 [against Lopez was complicated, but I managed to fight until the end.

I broke him in the second set without suffering too much on my service games. Then I had a big attack of exhaustion at the beginning of the third [set] but I managed to break him again and it fixed it all despite a lot of fatigue.

I lack a lot of physical form, but I am happy to have already won two matches, it is rather miraculous”. This is Gasquet’s first apparition on the Tour since the 2019 Swiss Indoors of Basel. He was scheduled to play the Paris Masters, but had to pull out before his clash with Dusan Lajovic in the first round, and has not been active during the Australian month.
