Croatian Captain Vedran Martic: Marin Cilic deserves statue in Croatia

New Croatian Davis Cup Team Captain Vedran Martic insisted his team never took India for granted as he was satisfied with the way 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic stepped up for the hosts this weekend. Croatia handed India a 3-1 defeat in a Davis Cup qualifying round tie -- on an indoor-hard surface in Zagreb -- to qualify for the Davis Cup Finals for the second consecutive year.

World No. 37 Cilic delivered for the hosts in both rubbers played as he beat Ramkumar Ramanathan on the opening day of the tie before he saw Sumit Nagal in the fourth rubber to give Croatia a 3-1 lead and close out the tie.

Captain Martic was full of praise for former world No. 3 Cilic as he thinks the player who led Croatia to winning the Davis Cup title in 2018 deserves a statue for the contributions he has made to the team over the years.

Borna Gojo, ranked at No. 277 in the world, also contributed to the Croatia win as he defeated Prajnesh Gunneswaran in the opening rubber of the tie to give the hosts an early lead. "We were never in awe of the India team but we were wary because we knew they could pose a threat," Martic said, per the Davis Cup website.

“We banked on Marin winning both his singles but that’s often easier said than done. Borna Gojo took some of the pressure off our top-ranked player by clinching his own opening singles match and that’s exactly what we had hoped for.

But at the end of the day, it’s Cilic who deserves a statue for everything he’s done for Croatia’s tennis."
