Gael Monfils: I want to help Elina Svitolina achieve her goals

French tennis star Gael Monfils, 33, wants to help his girlfriend Elina Svitolina get better and achieve her goals. Svitolina, 25, has yet to win a Grand Slam title but she made it all the way at the prestigious season-ending WTA Finals in 2018 after beating Sloane Stephens in the final.

World No. 5 Svitolina has had multiple deep runs at the Grand Slams, having reached the semifinal at last year's Wimbledon and US Open. The Ukrainian tennis star has also made two quarterfinals at each of the remaining two Grand Slams, Australian Open and French Open.

"To share the same goals, the dedication and experience is something amazing,” Monfils told the ATP Tour. “It’s a very individual, selfish sport, and most of the time we (me and Elina) are alone, but we appreciate the time we have together: at home or tournaments.

"I hope I help her, and when we practise together we laugh. Perhaps, I’m more serious when I hit with her, as I want to help Elina to achieve her goals." Monfils, ranked at No. 9 in the world, is a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist and former world No.

6. The 33-year-old Frenchman won't quit as he still hopes that he will manage to win a Grand Slam title and break into the top-5 before he calls it a career. "It’s a dream to win a Slam and being in the Top 5, even for one week, is a goal.

So many players have the potential, but they struggle like me… I hope one day to have the opportunity," Monfils admitted.
