Two-time ATP champion Borna Coric thinks Daniil Medvedev has the potential to win a Grand Slam and that could happen soon. Medvedev, ranked at No. 5 in the world, enjoyed an outstanding 2019 season as he made nine finals last year.
One of those nine finals came at the US Open, where he was edged out by world No. 2 Rafael Nadal in an exciting five-set final. The Russian claimed two Masters titles last year and the next step for him will be making a breakthrough at the Grand Slam level.
"If tennis returns, I definitely think he can win a Grand Slam (in the next year). The guy is playing unbelievably when he is in form," Coric said on the Podcast Incubator. Outside the US Open, Medvedev's best Grand Slam success came at the Australian Open, where he has twice made the round-of-16.
The Russian has also twice made the third round at Wimbledon, while surprisingly he has never managed to win a match at the French Open. After an outstanding 2019 season, many believed Medvedev was ready to conquer this year's Australian Open.
After starting his campaign with a four-set win over Frances Tiafoe, Medvedev claimed back-to-back straight set wins over Spain's Pedro Martinez and Australian Alexei Popyrin. Medvedev's campaign at the Australian Open came to an end in the round-of-16 after losing to three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka.
Medvedev entered the match against Wawrinka as the favorite but the Swiss used all of his past Grand Slam experience to surprise the Russian in five sets.
