Stefanos Tsitsipas speaks highly of Grigor Dimitrov after win at French Open

No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas said winning a tight second set was the key in his win over world No. 20 Grigor Dimitrov at the French Open. Tsitsipas, ranked at No. 6 in the world, handed a straight-set defeat to No. 18 seed Dimitrov 6-3 7-6 (9) 6-2 to make his maiden quarterfinal at the French Open.

Tsitsipas started the match on a perfect way as he broke Dimitrov in the second game to take a quick 3-0 lead. Dimitrov got on the board in the fourth game of the fourth set but it didn't lead to a comeback as Tsitsipas served out for the set in the ninth game.

As there were no breaks in the second set, the set went into a tie-break -- in which Tsitsipas saved two set points before he converter his third set point to take a two-set lead. Tsitsipas then started the third set with a 3-0 lead and broke Dimitrov in the eighth game to win the set and seal the win.

"The tie-break was very tense. The tie-break was where all the money was,” Tsitsipas said after beating Dimitrov, per the ATP website. “I am glad that I played good tennis and I didn’t panic. I stayed concentrated, stayed low-key and tried to take it point-by-point.

“I think it worked out pretty well at the end. I showed lots of discipline, lots of responsibility. It was a very responsible win in the second set and I am very happy with myself and the attitude that I put out on the court”.

Tsitsipas spoke highly of Dimitrov after the match

Tsitsipas insisted he entered the match against 2017 Nitto ATP Finals champion Dimitrov expecting a tight clash. "I felt comfortable. I think Grigor can be very unpredictable and he has a great game, so coming into the match you don’t really know what to expect,” said Tsitsipas.

“We have a similar style of play, so I knew that if I could be as aggressive as possible, play with my forehand and use my serve to create opportunities, they [would] eventually come. "There was a very good, high quality of tennis from both of us.

I managed to stay concentrated and press on my return games… My aggressiveness from my return games and my focus on every single point, at the end, rewarded me”.
