Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini insists the players on the ATP Cup team really enjoy represent their country and that's one of the reasons for their early-success at the ATP Cup. After beating Austria on the opening day of the ATP Cup, Italy claimed ite second win on Wednesday after defeating France.
In the second rubber of the tie, world No. 8 Berrettini saw off former US Open semifinalist Gael Monfils 6-4 6-2 to seal.a victory for Italy. "It's a great team, great guys. We are enjoying on court, but off court as well.
I think when you're playing for your country, for your team, it's something special," Berrettini said in his on-court interview, as quoted on the ATP website. "Definitely this is a competition that I missed last year and this year I was really looking forward to playing.
I'm happy to be here and really happy for my team because we are through to the semi-finals."
Berrettini easily handled Monfils
Monfils took an early 4-1 first-set lead but then his game fell apart as Berrettini lost only two games in the rest of the match.
"I was ready for any score. I kept going," Berrettini said. "I thought about my weapons and that's how I won the match." In the opening rubber of the tie, 2019 Monte Carlo Masters champion Fabio Fognini defeated Benoit Paire 6-1 7-6 (2).
"For sure I'm happy about my performance," Fognini said in his on-court interview. "The second set was really tough." Fognini was up 6-1 3-0 before Paire won five games in a row to take a 5-3 second-set lead.
But Fognini didn't let Paire serve out for the set as he won the second set to wrap up a straight-set win. "I was playing really solid, but Benoit was doing a lot of mistakes. I have to be honest," Fognini said. "Of course when he starts to play [well], he's a really dangerous player. He can play really good."
