Thiago Monteiro reacts to making semifinal at Great Ocean Road Open

Brazilian tennis player Thiago Monteiro acknowledged that he had to play aggressive against Jordan Thompson or otherwide he would have lost to the Australian. Monteiro, ranked at No. 83 in the world, has made a positive start to the season as he has reached the semifinal at the Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne.

Monteiro, who considers clay as his favorite surface, handed a straight-set defeat to Thompson 6-4 6-4 in his second match of the day in Melbourne. In his first match of the day, Monteiro defeated rising Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

“I have to play aggressive against him, otherwise he would have beaten me again,” Monteiro said after beating Thompson, per Tennis Australia. “So I changed a little bit, tried to push a lot with my forehand.

I served really well. “I took my chances with the break points also, which was very good”.

Monteiro was a favorable matchup fpr Thompson

In his first match of the day, Thompson defeated Marco Vilella Martinez to set up a qiarterfinal against Monteiro.

Monteiro was a favorable matchup for Thompson but he failed to capitalize. Two days ago, Thompson stunned Pierre-Hugues Herbert. “He’s a tough player. He’s a world-class doubles player, world-class singles player,” Thompson said after beating Herbert.

“He plays on the edge, takes a lot of risks, and even in that last game, he pushed me. I had to serve it out pretty tough and save a break point. It felt like he was red lining, going after everything. I was just ready to move and just try to make as many balls as possible”.

Despite the loss, it was a good preparation for the Australian Open. “I haven’t played anything since October, November. It’s good to be playing matches,” tThompson acknowledged. “Already played three in two days, got more to come. So it’s great prep”.
