World No. 33 Filip Krajinovic blamed himself after losing to No. 4 seed Daniil Medvedev in five sets at the Australian Open. Krajinovic recovered from two sets down against Medvedev but the Russian tennis star won 6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-0 to progress into the round-of-16.
After losing back-to-back sets, Medvedev impressively bounced back in the fifth set as he bageled Krajinovic to avoid a shock loss. '''He really started really aggressive with a lot of first serves, good returns.
I was waiting for him to do a couple of mistakes, which is not smart and at this level you cannot wait for any mistakes and I did it. At the end he deserved to win, was better in the fifth set. I'm very disappointed I lost 6-0,'' Krajinovic said after the match, per Ravi Ubha.
Krajinovic praised by Medvedev
Medvedev, who is aiming to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, spoke positively of Krajinovic after the match. “He played unbelievable, especially in the fourth set,” Medvedev said on court, per the ATP website.
“Third set I had some chances… He raised his level. I tried to change my position on the return in the fifth set and it seemed to be working well, I guess”. Before today, Medvedev was 0-of-6 in five-set matches.
“I remember many of these five-set matches. I think three or four of them I would be a break up or something like this. I always say experience is key for me, so in this fifth set I felt like of course it was tight, but as soon as I got the break, I was under control,” Medvedev said.
“In contrast with the previous matches where I could get tight, start to rush things, to make some errors. Here I was… really calm to finish the match and I’m really happy that I got my first five-set win”.
