Daniil Medvedev: Russian tennis is definitely on the rise

Top-ranked Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev is hoping that he and fellow compatriot Andrey Rublev will continue their rise and continue to promote Russian tennis. Medvedev is currently enjoying a career-high ranking of No.

2 in the world, while Rublev is ranked at his career-high ranking of No. 8 in the world. “I think it's great for both of us that we are doing so good,” said Medvedev, per the ATP website. “Russian tennis is definitely on the rise right now, and I like it.

We want people to talk more about tennis in Russia. That's what's happening right now. We want TV [channels] to show more tennis in Russia. That's one of the goals. “When you start to be good, you want to promote your sport in your country… I'm really happy that I have a lot of wins this year”.

Medvedev makes a positive start at the Miami Masters

No. 1 seed Medvedev handed a 6-2 6-2 loss to Yen-hsun Lu in his opener at the Miami Masters. “It was not easy to play today with the windy conditions," Medvedev said in an on-court interview.

"I am happy that I managed to keep my nerve, play solid and not make so many mistakes… Everything worked well and I am looking forward to the next round”. Medvedev plays next against rising Australian star Alexei Popyrin, who recently won his maiden ATP title in Singapore.

"Popyrin is a really great player,” said Medvedev. “I practised with him a lot during pre-season and I know that he can play some great tennis, so it will be a tough match”. Meanwhile, Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4 6-4.

“I’m very happy, because it was a tricky first match. I’ve lost to him before, and I won saving match points. So he’s a tricky opponent with a great serve,” Auger-Aliassime said in his on-court interview.
