Daniil Medvedev drops big praise on Roberto Bautista Agut ahead of Miami clash

No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev claimed it wasn't easy playing against Frances Tiafoe though he recorded a straight-set win over the American. Medvedev, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 2 in the world, handed a 6-4 6-3 loss to Tiafoe to reach his maiden Miami quarterfinal.

Medvedev claimed the first break of the match in the key moments of the first set as he broke Tiafoe in the 10th game to win the opener. Medvedev was down by a break early in the second set but he bounced back with back-to-back breaks and booked a straight-set win.

“It was definitely a tough match,” said Medvedev, per the ATP website. “[There were] a lot of great points, some of them he won, some of them I won… The serve helped me a lot today, especially in the second set”.

Medvedev plays next Roberto Bautista Agut

“I don’t really care about ATP Head2Head, because it is always a new match. We saw some with Roger when he is like 15-0 against someone and the guy finally gets a win in maybe an important match.

"I am just looking forward to tomorrow. Roberto is a hell of a player. I feel like sometimes, when I have practised with him and played against him, that his Ranking should be higher. There are reasons why it is not and I am going to try to do something with it tomorrow”.

Most importantly, Medvedev recovered from cramps and he was fully fit for the match against Tiafoe. “It’s probably one of the sweetest victories in my career, because I was cramping like hell in the third set,” Medvedev said after beating Alexei Popyrin in the third round.

“It’s one thing when you’re cramping when you’re [ahead in the score], but I started cramping before. It was tough to think about the win in these conditions.' '
