German tennis star Alexander Zverev didn't take Lorenzo Sonego for granted and he delivered a good performance to beat the in-form Italian at the Monte Carlo Masters . Zverev, seeded at No. 5 in the Monte Carlo main draw, handed a straight-set defeat to Sonego 6-3 6-3 to make the round-of-16 at the tournament.
Zverev claimed the first break of the match in the fourth game, before saving two break points in the following game to take a 4-1 lead. Sonego broke back Zverev in the seventh game but the German claimed another break in the eighth game, before serving out for the opener in the following game.
Sonego recovered from a break down in the second set to level the set at three games apiece, before Zverev claimed back-to-back breaks to win the second set and book a straight-set win. Sonego won the Sardegna Open in Cagliari last week after recovering from a set down to beat Laslo Djere.
"Lorenzo just won a tournament, so he is obviously in very good form right now and playing good tennis," Zverev said in his post-match interview, per the ATP website. "The first match on a clay courts is never easy, but I am happy to be through like that."
Zverev plays next David Goffin
Goffin cruised past Marco Cecchinato on Wednesday as he handed the Italian a 6-4 6-0 loss. Goffin claimed the lone break of the first set in the third game, before serving out for the opener in the 10th game.
Goffin then bageled Cecchinato in the second set to finish the match in style. “[Goffin] is extremely difficult to beat, especially during the first few matches on clay,” Zverev said. “I think he feels extremely comfortable on this surface, so it is going to be interesting to see how that goes.
Every time we have played [it has been] three sets. I am expecting a very difficult match”. It remains to be seen if Zverev can beat Goffin to make the quarterfinal.
