Simona Halep wants to win in Tokyo 2021

Simona Halep's 2021 began with the quarter-finals reached at the WTA 500 in Melbourne and the Australian Open, where she lost respectively to Ekaterina Alexandrova and Serena Williams. In the first tournament played on the clay-courts of Stuttgart, however, the current number three in the world went to the semifinals and lost only to an excellent Aryna Sabalenka.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Halep talked about her future goals and her Olympic dream. She said: "The pain that prevented me from playing against Italy in the Billie Jean Cup has fortunately passed. Now I can't wait to enjoy these weeks, finally free from physical problems.

I certainly couldn't wait to get back on the court. Madrid and Rome are tournaments to which I am very attached, for the environment, for the memories and for the many fans who follow me with affection. There are many Romanians both here in Spain and here in Rome and for me these two tournaments are a second home.

Olympic Games? It is certainly the priority objective of this season. I care a lot and I hope that everything can go smoothly, I want to bring a medal to Romania." Halep was one of the first tennis players to promote the vaccination campaign.

She added: "Yes, I think it is an important thing, even if from the point of view of the bubble it changes little. I am very pleased that both WTA and ATP are committed to giving athletes the opportunity to get vaccinated during tournaments.

What do I think about bubbles in the tennis world? Usually when I am at tournaments I love to go around the city, to walk, to go and enjoy the delicacies of the kitchen. Staying in the bubble is a bit heavy, we can talk among colleagues but nothing else.

But we can play and I think this is the most important thing." We have to cecall that Simona Halep will play the WTA Mutua Madrid Open, tournament scheduled this week where she will make her first round match against the Spanish player Sara Sorribes Tormo.
