Dominic Thiem: I thought US Open final.might be my final chance to win Major

Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem suggested that even he was surprised that his maiden Grand Slam title came at the US Open. Thiem, ranked at No. 4 in the world, claimed his maiden Grand Slam title after beating German Alexander Zverev in last year's US Open final.

Thiem, who considers clay as his best surface, finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in back-to-back French Open finals in 2018 and 2019. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was the top favorite to win the US Open but he got defaulted in the round-of-16 and Thiem made the most out of it.

In the final, Thiem recovered from two sets down to beat Zverev 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 (6). “Until the start of the US Open, I would never expect to stand there at the end and lift the trophy," Thiem told the ATP website.

Thiem feared he would never win a Grand Slam

Earlier in 2020, Thiem was up 2-1 over Djokovic in the Australian Open final but he ended up losing in five sets. “It was very, very difficult to digest because I was starting to doubt [myself] a little bit,” Thiem said.

“And starting to imagine what I [would] think about my career if I never did it after having this great chance”. Thiem was considered as a favorite over Zverev in the US Open final. "I think everybody else declared me to be the favourite but me,” Thiem said.

“I knew how good Sascha is and how difficult it is to play against him. The pressure was huge. I really thought this might be my final chance”. After winning the US Open, Thiem hopes to win more Grand Slams. “[Wawrinka] had five amazing years where he was playing well in all the big tournaments, winning two more majors,” Thiem said. “And that’s my goal, that I can use the huge boost that the US Open gave [me]”.
