Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas insisted he knew it would not be easy agaiinst Cameron Norrie and he was proud of the performance he put up in the Lyon final. Tsitsipas, seeded at No. 2 in the Lyon main draw, handed a 6-3 6-3 loss to world No.
49 Norrie. Tsitsipas faced three consecutive break points in the first game but saved all of them. Norrie also faced break points in the second game but saved two break points to level the set at one game apiece. Tsitsipas claimed the first break of the match in the eighth game, before routinely serving out for the opener in the following game.
Norrie led 3-2 in the second set before Tsitsipas claimed back-to-back breaks and won four games in a row to seal a straight-set win. “I felt in good shape from the beginning of the tournament. I am proud of today’s match, I knew it would be a difficult one against Cameron who has been showing great tennis this week,” Tsitsipas said on court, per the ATP website.
“He has been winning against good players and showing what the left hand can do on clay. It was not an easy match today, I had to handle the nerves and I am proud of my performance and the way I stayed focussed towards my goal”.
Tsitsipas now aims a deep French Open run
Tsitsipas has had a big clay season so far as he made it all the way at the Monte Carlo Masters and finished runner-up a the Barcelona Open. Tsitsipas, who made the French Open semifinal last year, will now be aiming to make a deep run on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
“It is about getting there as early possible, starting to practise and getting in shape for the big Parisian Grand Slam, which I adore and love and hopefully something good can come from it,” Tsitsipas said.
Tsitsipas fell just short of making his maiden French Open final last year as he ended up losing in five sets to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal.
