Spanish tennis star Roberto Bautista Agut was happy with the way he started his campaign at the French Open. Bautista Agut, ranked at No. 11 in the world, handed a 6-4 6-4 6-2 loss to Mario Vilella Martinez in the French Open first round on Sunday.
“I think it's very important to start a tournament well. I was very focused. I was very concentrated. I knew Mario has good weapons, good serve, good forehand, and I had to be very focussed,” Bautista Agut said after the match, per the ATP website.
“I respected a lot the match. I went into the court very concentrated, and I think I did a great job”.
Bautista Agut didn't let Vilella Martinez cause an upset
Vilella Martinez held on to his serve until the ninth game, when Bautista Agut claimed his first break of the match.
After earning the first break of the match, Bautista Agut routinely served out for the opener. Bautista Agut collected the first break of the second set in the fifth game but got broken back in the eighth game. However, Bautista Agut kept his focus as he broke Vilella Martinez again in the ninth game and served out for the second set in the following game.
Vilella Martinez led 2-1 after the opening three games of the third set but then Bautista Agut collected back-to-back breaks -- won five games in a row to complete a straight-set win. Bautista Agut plays next against Henri Laaksonen, who beat Yannick Hanfmann 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-2.
Laaksonen is looking forward to facing Bautista Agut. "I actually like his game. I love how he plays. He's a really tough competitor. He doesn't give anything for free," Laaksonen said. "I think it's good for me to see how I can compete with him, and I have to do my best, try to be aggressive, and give all that I have."
