Alexander Zverev not taking Taylor Fritz for granted at Wimbledon

Top-ranked German tennis player Alexander Zverev was happy that he managed to beat Tennys Sandgren and make the Wimbledon third round. Zverev, ranked at No. 6 in the world, saw off Sandgren in straight sets 7-5 6-2 6-3 to reach the third round at The Championships.

"I feel pretty well. Of course I know that the opponents are getting tougher. I know that I need to play better tennis," Zverev said. "But all in all, I'm happy where I am. I hope I can continue to build on my form."

Zverev routinely handled Sandgren

Zverev claimed the first break of the match in the 11th game and then served out for the opener in the following game. Sandgren served out the opening game of the second set, before Zverev claimed back-to-back breaks and won five games in a row to take a 5-1 lead.

Sandgren served out the seventh game to end Zverev's run but the German served out for a two-set lead in the eighth game. In the third set, Zverev broke Sandgren twice to win the set and book a straight-set win. Zverev plays next Taylor Fritz, who beat Steve Johnson.

"I'm very surprised that he's actually playing here and I'm very surprised how well he's playing. I have to give credit to him for coming back this quickly," Zverev said. "I think on a grass court he's extremely dangerous.

He has a very fast serve, has big weapons. We played a very difficult match here... I'm looking forward it, because I know it's not going to be easy." Meanwhile, Roger Federer beat Richard Gasquet in three sets.

“I know Richard really well," said Federer. "We’ve played so many times against each other. It’s always a pleasure playing against him. He’s got the most wonderful backhand… It was a wonderful match for me.

I was really happy with my performance today. A tough first set and a great second set. I was just a little bit better in the third. I’m very, very happy, of course. “It’s not the most important to feel your absolute best in the first and second rounds.

What you don’t want to do is go out. Because then you’ve got to really look at everything and question yourself. I’m not there. I’m in the third round, I’m really happy with my level right now. Today was special, so I’m very happy with that”.
