Elina Svitolina found another door closed at Roland Garros 2019. This time in the third round, against Garbine Muguruza. Of course, after the unexpected victory at the WTA Finals 2018, the Ukranian has always found excellent placements, but she has never made a new big shot.
It is no coincidence that in 2019 she has not yet won even a title nor even played a final. Now the worst part of the season is coming for Elina, on grass, on a playing surface to which she has never adapted well, as her technical skills are more suited clay-courts and hard-courts.
Her regularity and her excellent placements in tournaments will give her a bright future in the WTA Ranking, but, analyzing her season, you can see how the final step is always missing. After the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, Svitolina made semi-final in Doha, semi-final in Dubai and semi-final at Indian Wells, second round in Miami, first round in Madrid, second round in Rome and third round at Roland Garros.
An excellent first part and a second part with ups and downs. Everything is normal, after all. Her real season will probably start after Wimbledon, and then continue on the North American hard-courts and during the indoor Fall, moments of the season where she may have chances to get other important results, even if statistically Svitolina lives her best time of the season between January and May.
This year could be the time to reverse the trend, find more concreteness to combine with regularity, solidity and results.
