Italian tennis star Lorenzo Sonego was glad with the fact that he was fully focused from the beginning until the end of his Metz opener. Sonego, seeded at No. 5, saw off top-ranked Hungarian tennis player Marton Fucsovics 6-3 6-2 to reach the Metz round-of-16.
“I was really focused today,” Sonego said in his on-court interivew, as quoted on the ATP website. “Marton is a great player and it was a tough match today. I liked my tennis and I am really happy. I am confident because this year has been my best.
I am now No. 24 in the world, which is my best ranking. I have played my best tennis this year”.
Sonego routed Fucsovics
Sonego made a good start to the match, having claimed the first break of the match in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead.
Sonego then routinely held on to his serve the rest of the set to win the opener. After losing the opener, Fucsovics made the worst possible start to the second set, having lost his service game in the opening game of the set.
Fucsovics' situation got even worse when he got broken again in the fifth game and fell down by a double break. Sonego then routinely closed out the match as he converted his second match point in the eighth game to book a straight-set win.
Sonego, 26, is making his second appearance in Metz. Sonego debuted at the Metz event in 2019, when he made the round-of-16 before losing to Lucas Pouille. Sonego is enjoying playing in Metz and he is hoping to make a deep run at the event.
“I like the atmosphere here because it is dark and it is nice,” Sonego added. “I like playing here, this is my second time. Two years ago I lost in the second round and I want to do better”. Sonego, ranked at No.
24 in the world, next plays against the winner of the match between rising Danish stat Holger Rune and Australian Alexei Popyrin.
