After Lionel Messi finished ahead of Robert Lewandowski in the voting for the Ballon d'Or and won his seventh prize of such kind, the star who led Argentina to win the 2021 Copa America edition for the first time since 1993 was denied by the German Boris Becker, 6 times Grand Slam winner and former world number one, the latter alleging that Bayern Munchen's striker Robert Lewandowski should have won the prize.
Boris Becker expressed his opinion in an Instagram comment. “Robert should have won the award!” wrote Becker.
Lionel Messi himself acknowledged that Robert Lewandowski should have indeed received a prize as well.
"You deserve your Ballon d'Or. Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner,” said Messi. However, Messi also showed his hopeful approach regarding his future in the game that made him famous.
"I don't know how many years I have left, but I hope there will still be many because I am having enormous fun," Messi said.
How did Lewandowski react to Messi’s Ballon d'Or win
