NÜRNBERGER VERSICHERUNGSCUP The fans didn't have the happy endind they were dreaming of, as Andrea Petkovic couldn't complete her perfect comeback, losing the final match of the NÜRNBERGER VERSICHERUNGSCUP International tournament to Simona Halep in front of her home-crowd.
The Young and talented Romanian was born in 1991 in the city of Constanta and is still only 21 years old. As tennis becomes more and more a sport for "old" athletes who can dominate the game after their 30's we can say that Simona Halep has a bright future ahead.
The final of the Nurnberg tournament wasn't a match high in emotions. Halep dominated the encounter without losing a single service game and breaking Petkovic's serve three times en route to a 6-3 6-3 victory in less than two hours.
The Romanian player saved all 8 break points she faced and hit 6 aces, despite measuring only 5'6". With a brilliant game that relies on perfect timing, Simona feel on the red clay of the German tournament, becoming a champion for the first time in her career at a WTA event.
Andrea Petkovic made her appeareance in the final of a WTA tournament for the first time since finishing Runner-up at the Beijing tournament in October 2011.
Since that moment Andrea had to go through a lot. The German former top 10 athlete struggled with a multitude of injuries that kept her away from the tennis courts for too long. Back on the tour this year, Petkovic faced another injury when playing at the first tournament of the year in Brisbane and was back on court only in March, for the Indian Wells and Miami Premier events.
Falling at No.103 in the rankings Andrea started to find her confidence back, as she won an ITF tournament in Marseille 2 weeks ago. Building on that confidence the German found her way into the NÜRNBERGER VERSICHERUNGSCUP final, beating Top Seed Jelena Jankovic in the semi-finals.
Andrea had to surrend to the talent of Simona Halep, a rising star in women's tennis. The young Romanian, who few years ago decided to go through a brest reduction operation in order to improve her game, made her break-through this year at the Internazionali BNL d'italia in Rome, reaching the semi-finals and losing only to World No.1 Serena Williams.
With a trophy in her hands, Halep can look confident at the upcoming grass courts season.
