32-year-old Jürgen Melzer took out Fabio Fognini 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships 2013. Though Fognini is ranked higher than Melzer, the Austrian had reached the career-high rank of #8 in April 2011.
He showed sheer determination and was full of confidence thoughout the match. The first set headed neck-to-neck until the Italian bagged it through the tie-breaker. In the second set, both the players took the possession again as the set was tied up at 5-5.
Thereafter, Melzer broke his counterpart to seal the second set 7-5. The third set looked one-sided as Melzer easily won the third set 6-3 and eventually took a 2-1 lead. It was a must-win fourth set for Fognini, who failed to hold on his serve as Melzer broke him twice to seal the fourth set 6-2.
Great day for Jürgen Melzer in the office, who moves on to the second round to meet German qualifier Julian Reister who stunned Lukas Rosol in the first round.
