Genie Bouchard becomes soccer club fan, puts on official kit

During her time spent in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on the occasion of the Transylvania Open, Bouchard became a fan of a Romanian soccer team called U (Universitatea) Cluj and even put on their official shirt. The athlete from Canada received as a gift an official U Cluj game shirt, signed by all the players.

"Our newest fan! It was great seeing you in Cluj," U Cluj captioned the photo displaying Bouchard wearing their kit. Currently, U Cluj is in the 13th position in the Romanian Superliga.

Bouchard calls Romanians weird

Besides getting attention from the soccer team, Genie Bouchard delved deeper into the culture of Romanians as she provoked laughter at Transylvania Open after she found out about a characteristic Romanian idiomatic expression.

"What on Earth? You are so weird," said Genie Bouchard after she read the English translation of the Romanian saying. The expression is translated word for word in English as follows: "I'm getting drunk with cold water." The idiomatic phrase translated above is used in Romanian to tell somebody to not celebrate too early or to not get too enthusiastic because the thing they aim for hasn't yet happened.

Cluj-Napoca impressed Genie Bouchard. After arriving in the city for the Transylvania Open, tennis star Genie Bouchard had the opportunity to explore the city branded as "The Heart of Transylvania," and she rapidly developed an addiction.

"So we just got to Romania and I am completely obsessed," said Bouchard on Instagram. Unfortunately for her, Bouchard's journey in Romania was short. Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard was compelled to retire from her inaugural match against Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina at the WTA 250 Transylvania Open.

Bouchard asked for a medical time-out after Kalinina won the first set 6-3. Shortly after, the umpire announced Bouchard's retirement from the competition hosted in Cluj-Napoca.
